  1. Presentations are on Monday! Be ready.
  2. Also, please put 12 quotes from your story on your blog. For each one, explain why you chose it (why is it important?).

Line1

“ Animals,” said Melvin. “ how do they live with themselves”

This sentence actually shows how much the Outer hornerites hate the inner hornerites. Calling other Animals shows that the outer hornerites are not tolerant and do not like the inner hornerite.

Line2

“No wonder we treat them so unfairly”

The outer hornerites did not feel like having people take over their country so they kept them but were treating them bad.

“”

Line3

Are you leaving me Al, said the president

Phil was so evil, he became the president and even took people to believe in what he believes and fight for him

Line4

“ I find myself wondering what happened to their old president”

This shows that Phil got rid of the president; he became the president in a dishonest way.

Line 5

“Next morning Phil and the Outer Horner Militia arrived at the border to find the entire population of Inner Horner…”

This line is actually important because it shows that Phil was not going to leave the problem find its own solution. They did not like the Inner so they were ready to make them live their country.

Line6

” Only one Inner Hornerite at a time could fit inside”

This lien says a lot about the conflict. The fact that the inner hornerites was too small only one at the time could fit in, they had to share the outer hornerites space which bothered the outer.

Line7

” Welcome to the New Horner.”

At the end they felt like it was better for them to unit and make a new horner. This is important because it shows that the problem was solved.

Line 8

“If you take our clothes, we’ll be naked”, said Wanda.

“But at least you’ll have your taxes paid”, said Phil.

This line shows how unfairly the inner hornerites were treated. Because they were in the outer hornerite zone, they were forced to pay taxes. When they could not pay those taxes, they had their clothes being taken away from them.

Line 9

“As the months went by the new hornerites took to avoid the phil”

Phil was evil and selfish; he brought conflict to a problem that could have been resolve easily or differently. It is good that they decided to avoid the supposedly “monster”

 Line10

“this is the time to be kind to one another, remember each of you wants to be happy  and each one of you want to live free from fear  you are secretly afraid  that you are not good enough but you are trust me, you are “

This line shows that they all realize that they all want to be happy; this conflict was not going anywhere. Whn they realize that they all want to be happy they decided to act as one.

Line 11

“Us being us, do we not being fully good had the right to end what, totally bad, threaten us, even in the slightest? Would it not be negligent to do otherwise?”

This line shows that the outer hornerites did not feel bad abot whatever they were doing. For them it was right to do what they were doing because they felt like it was the right thing to do they felit like they had to put an end to what they thought was threaten them, or totally bad.

Line 12

“Big things will happen there. We are dealing with a violent, irrational people who really hate us”

This quote says a lot about the new president and most importantly it shows how bad the outer hornerites was taking things. For them the inner hornerites were violent and irrational. I actually think that the people who could say that are the inner hornerites.

hw….. 04/14/10

What message is George Saunders trying to tell the readers? How do  you know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Rich and Poor

The way the “ have” treats the “ have not” … the outer hornerite had and they were treating the inner hornerite  like crap just because they did not have  what they add a country with space where everyone can fit in

Society

What the world still doesn’t understand is that whenever one is affected everyone suffer because society is like a chain.

Individual actions

Phil was able to bring conflict in one place. His actions affected everyone. The outer hornerite were mislead and the inner hornerite were mistreated

getting a lil ready fr summer… spring break is here

To be impressive you do not have to be on top of the world
To be who you are you do not have to be at the bottom of the ground
To be what you want to be you do not have to be in the center
Anywhere you are the strength in you to achieve and reach is in you
It is the blood that runs in your veins
It is the reason why you here
There is not precise place to be at in order to be successful

Homework for Spring Break
Part 1: Reading
Finish your story. Don’t forget to annotate… There is one more presentation to go!
Part 2: Writing
Explain how the concepts in your outcome from this week are related to your story. Do this in at least two paragraphs. Don’t forget to say what story you are reading and what outcome you are working with.
In case you forgot…here are the three outcomes:
020.0910: Student analyzes the use of literary elements and techniques in George Saunders’ writing.
First of all my story is about a dispute between the countries of Inner and Outer Horner. Because the country is so small only one inner hornerite at the time can fit in and the others six inner hornerites have to wait for their turns to live in their own country so they are all living in the outer Horner zone and this is bringing conflict because for the Outer Hornerites, they are taking their space away. They are waiting in the Outer Horner zone for their turn to go back to their country. Phil, a awful Outer Hornerite begins to tax the Inner Hornerites for staying in his country.. Even when they could not pay they will take away their clothes which made the inner embarrassed and useless. Phil assembles a small group of genial brutes to help him overthrow the current president, try to get rid of the Inner Hornerites and anyone else who stands in his way.
Adolph Hitler is probably one of the worst people ever to live. When people talk of evil deeds he is at the top of the list. He was a man of words, and could use them to his advantage. He had an ability to talk and make the Germans believe that the Jews were the reason for the problems in their country; so he gave them the idea to move them out. Then under his command they forced the Jews in to death camps.  After Adolph Hitler convinced the Germans that the Jews were the center of all problems, he started to make camps to place all the Jews. These camps weren’t nice places to be. They were all used to kill millions of Jews.
We believe that this story is the allegory of the holocaust. The first thing I thought when I connected the story was Hitler and Phil.   That is what happen in real life everyone is ignorant and they let themselves being leading by someone’s cruel, they prefer to live someone else’s beliefs. Adolph Hitler convinced the Germans that the Jews were the center of all problems, he made them believe something they did not care if it was good or not? How it will affect those people. The same for Phil just because he believes that the inner hornerite are criminals destroy their place whatever that is. Phil and Hither both were ignorant and awful beings. They made the whole society ignorant. It is like they impassioned them.
The story is also the allegory of the holocaust because it is basically the same thing a society rejecting a certain group of people.  Because they do not like a certain group of people they started to treat them bad. The outer hornerites represents the Germans and the inner hornerites represent the Jews.  Like the Jews the inner horners were treated differently and rejected. And the outer hornerite are letting Phil mislead them just like Hitler mislead the Germans.

Homework 18/03/10

1. What is the name of your story?
The name of my story is the Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil.
2. What outcome did your group pick for this week?
Students have to analyze the story through the lens of sociological imagination (outcome 19)
3.  In one at least two paragraphs, explain how the outcome is related to your story.
Basically sociological imagination is the set of mind that allows individuals to see the relationship between events in their personal lives and events in their society. The story is really involved with society issues. When you talk about a country or a place where everyone is living, there will always be conflict n matter how similar or different the people are. The sitting is a big problem for the natives. The inner and outer hornerites are in this small country where the inner get a little space where only one person can fit. Although the place is small the outer make them pay taxes because they are really patriot and feel like the inner do not deserve to be on their land. A way in which this is connected to real life because sometimes we as humans never think is enough we always want more than we already have and this bring lot of conflict. The outers are living better then the inner so why would they make people pay taxes. Even today although the rich lives in good condition, they always want to take from the poor. Another way it is connected to the sociological imagination is the fact that the outers are selfish and only care about their own interest. They do not care about the society as a whole. And this is making the all outer hornerites society bad. People will judge them all the same way because no one is fighting for the inner and standing for them.  So even if they have to be kick out of the country, no one will stand for them.
